Luminaires (single)

Since I finished working on my last album, R U There?, a lot has changed. I decided to pretty much revamp my whole music production approach, as I bought a used Kemper for my guitars and bass, switched my drum library to Tchimera, and most importantly decided to finally give a try to MuseScore 4 and its Muse Sounds, to see if it would be a viable replacement for my virtual orchestration workflow.

These where a lot of changes, which is why it’s been taking so long for me to work on new music, but “Luminaires” is the first piece I wanted to share. It’s a reflections of all the changes I mentioned, except for guitars: while I originally wanted some guitars to be there, eventually it felt like they would be out of place, and so I left them out, leaving a more orchestral piece from beginning to end. In a future revision this may change, but for now I’m happy about as it is.

“Luminaires” also is an appetizer from an upcoming album I’m working on, “Loser”. But slow as I’ve been, lately, who knows when I’ll be able to finish it

You can listen to the new song on my Faircamp:

but if you like it and you’re feeling generous, it can be found on Bandcamp and Mirlo too.

As usual, all mixed and mastered with Ardour 9.2.0!

Thanks for your kind words Tony, glad you liked it!

Nice work indeed. Builds well and has feeling. And good sounds.
I haven’t done much creation for a while, but dabbled with that Tchimera kit and was most impressed with it. It fits perfectly in this song.

Nice one ! I like the progressive approach, the orchestra part is well put in depth with the drums as it comes. Nice track !
By the way, I’m listening to R U There and sounds completely different ! It’s another story, but I like it too ! Followed you (AntikytherA). Well done !

Thanks! After having used a completely different kit for years, I was a bit scared learning a new one, but I’m happy it worked! Now I’ll just have to make sure it does in the other songs too

Thanks for the nice words! Yeah, in R U There there’s a lot of orchestra too, but at the time I was using a different workflow that I had got to after years of experimentation (the one documented at the beginning of my post). Once I started tinkering with MuseScore 4, though, it made everything I did so far sound poorer in retrospect…

Luminaires is a more orchestra focused track, and there will be a couple of others in the same spirit, but the rest of the tracks will be more of a blend with progressive rock too, more in the spirit of R U There itself. So I’m curious if this new workflow will work just as well there too.

c’est magnifique!!!

Merci beaucoup

Finally had time for a listen, sounds gorgeous, a very impressive composition and production. The mix is really great too. I would agree the drum kit is a step up from previous compositions but IMO the reverb especially on the snare is a bit much. Stylistically I could see more reverb than normal on the drums in the big orchestra room context but I felt some of the power of the drums entering that section was blunted by the reverb. Anyway what I love about this far outweighs that very minor observation, great work!

@GMaq thanks for listening and for your precious feedback! I’ll definitely address it in the other tracks I’m working on, as Michael on LM said a similar thing.
