Options/Tips for Vertical Scrolling?

Continuing the discussion from Vertical scrollbar or scroll position hint:

Since this has yet to be re-implemented (if it ever will be…), what options are there for convenient and fast vertical scrolling in the Editor view?

So far we’ve got:

  1. Mouse wheel (and/or presumably track-pad).
  2. Jump to a track/bus by clicking on one in the Editor List’s “Tracks & Buses” pane.
  3. Up & down arrows.
  4. And… anything else? …

Look, I have a mouse with a wheel. But I just timed it, and it still takes ~20sec(!) of continuous scrolling to go from the first track to the last in a project with about 70 tracks/buses (+some shown automation lanes). :anguished:

This makes mixing a nightmare… :skull_and_crossbones:

@paul said here that:

“Sensible scroll wheels have latch mechanisms that can be disengaged. With my logitech mx master, I can disable the latch and scroll down a VERY long way with maybe two finger movements.”

Well, that would be great, but I don’t have that kind of mouse it seems…

I need to address this… Because System Preferences on this Mac Pro (w/ Mojave) does nothing to increase scrolling speed… So I guess the best options are to just get a better mouse, or perhaps some software that will actually increase scrolling speed?

Is there anything else I can do within Ardour itself?

Thanks,
-J

I have had the same issue but for different reasons with desktop and a laptop. Especially laptops that are really high powered so handle tons of tracks but still have the issue with track pads. The solution for me is to use VCA’s and right click the big rectangular area and add a bunch of tracks for each new VCA to break it up so I can just click a VCA and it will hide all the tracks I dont need. This might help you if you have not tried.

@GhostsonAcid

Ob. disclosure: I’m not usually using a track count > 30 or so.

In the Editor view, the Page Up and Page Down keys move me rapidly up and down through a session with 80 tracks: five keystrokes is sufficient to move from one end to the other on my 3840x2160 display. In the same vein, four or five middle-wheel strokes up or down accomplish the same feat (note that the track sizes are all set to “Normal” when I tested).

Likely I’m missing a key bit of your workflow, so I’ll apologize in advance for my presumption.

Tres.

Hmm… I don’t exactly know what you mean.

Are you referring to using this pane in another way?:

O___O
~Ding Ding Ding!

That TOTALLY helps for now…
Ha, I’ve never used those before, didn’t even notice them here.
They seem to move the screen up or down by about 14 tracks/buses per hit.
Nice!
Thank you!

I will also work on fixing this better mouse I have… (-A Razer Spectre.)
(-Something’s off with the cable I think.)

Followup on VCA:

  1. Create a VCA track
  2. Right click the pink box: VCA 2: Instruments in this example
  3. You can also add tracks to it. You can also select all the tracks you want in the mixer view and rightclick to add them to the VCA.
  4. hide and focus on those tracks by clicking the pink area. So you just hit one button and it shows only the tracks you need to see.

often find I am looking at non contiguous tracks so this option really helps.

I only learned this trick on this forum fairly recently despite having used Ardour a long time.

Nice…
This certainly works very well for the Mixer view!
I never considered using VCAs before. But they look potentially super useful for what I’m working on…

Thanks for the suggestion! :+1:
