How do i... apply an effect to a single region?

For example, i have a reverb on a sound effect, but i don’t want this reverb consuming CPU for the entire duration of the project. Is there a way to do this?

I’m like 95% certain you can’t currently (in Ardour 8.12) apply an effect/plugin to just a single region, unless of course it’s all alone on its own track. (-BUT, this feature (“RegionFX”) is coming in version 9! :astonished: :+1:)

But you might be able to apply some kind of bypass automation to your reverb plugin before and well-after your sound effect/region. What reverb plugin(s) are you using?

Worst case scenario, you can get a reverb effect you are satisfied with, export just that track, then import the new, effected region and just use that moving forward.

Some reverb plugins have an automatable bypass enable control.

Also most reverbs don’t use a lot of CPU to begin with, so you could just load it on a [reverb] bus and automate the send level for the duration of the region.

I often print reverbs instead of using sends with plugins to reduce CPU load. When region FX are out, the process will likely be simpler. I may be an outlier, but the reverbs I tend to use are CPU intensive. I tend toward large projects and find that I need to be more careful with Ardour (& MixBus) to get the most of my host.
