Ardour 9.0 is now available for Linux, macOS and Window systems. This is a major release for us, seeing several substantive new features that users have asked for over a long period of time. Region FX, clip recording, a touch-sensitive GUI, pianoroll windows, clip editing and more, not to mention dozens of bug fixes, new MIDI binding maps, improved GUI performance on macOS (for most) …
As a translator, I must say I was overwhelmed by the number of strings that needed to be translated for 9.0. But that’s just the strings – and where’s the code? One can immediately realize how much work went into the release and what a complex piece of software Ardour is. Kudos to you all!
PS And my favorite feature? The Pianoroll, of course! But there’s something even better – the pianoroll in the bottom panel. Love it.
After all these years… I could hardly believe it when the refactor that could enable a pianoroll was announced. This moment right here, feels like pure fiction. I can’t wait for thousands of people to open the piano roll and realize Paul was right all along and it’s absolutely, completely useless (that’s a joke, I’m sure it will be great, thank you so much for all the hard work <3).
Being serious for a moment, I suspect we have a bit more work to do on pianorolls before they are a serious contender for the ones found in other DAWs. It can do a lot (almost everything you can do in the main editor on the timeline), but a few details are a bit clunky (notable vertical note range management, and zoom management), and there’s a few more common editing operations that ought to be easy/possible.
That’s actually good to hear. Some clunkiness is to be expected when a feature this big ships for the first time, and it also means it will be possible to make adjustments based on feedback of far more people than just the developers and the beta testers. Getting something like the pianoroll completely right on the 1st try would be a very tall order. I’m glad you’re committed to making it right and not just implementing it so that people shut up.
Most of the issues with the pianoroll apply to the main editor now too, because the main editor and every pianoroll share the exact same code. In that sense it’s not really a new feature, but I did break or least damage a few details and having a standalone MIDI editor does open up the possibilities for MIDI editing in ways that are not necessarily obvious on the timline.
I coincidentally needed and tested this feature this morning.
Upon batch-importing some 77 tracks/buses from another project, it did VERY well!
-Still no transferring of audio regions though.
(~For that you might need AudioClipboard [shameless plug]. )
However, there are a few bugs that prevent routing (i.e. Aux Sends, and direct connections (potentially)) from properly transferring over. But @x42 will probably get to them relatively soon. ~Maybe after some …
