Zoom H4n not always recognized by Linux

This is not really an Ardour issue, more of a Linux USB issue. My Zoom H4n is not always recognized by Linux: it recognizes the Alcor USB Hub inside the H4n, but not necessarily the audio interface behind it. Any idea / fixup?

I don’t have an H4n, but used to use an H2 for quick-and-dirty field recording. On that older device, when I connected it to the laptop, there was a dialog on the (tiny) H2N screen asking how the USB connection should be set up: IIRC, the options were something like “USB drive”, “USB audio (record)”, and “USB audio (duplex)”.

Perhaps there is a similar dialog on the H4N?

There is such a dialog but this is not the issue. I select audio interface, and then there is some USB mixup. I suspect some USB2 vs USB3 issue on this new machine. One of the USB sockets (the one on the left of the machine) works, not the other two, for this device. Mystery.

It’s possible (but not guaranteed) the USB Audio device support for the H4N may be better in a newer kernel? Is it possible in whatever Distro you use to upgrade the Kernel? I had a somewhat similar issue with a Tascam PortacaptureX8 and it took until Kernel 6.14 for full support.
