Why do I hear static?

Hello, at some point during a project session. I started to hear static, I can’t tell if it is a plugin or something else. All I know is that it isn’t Ardour as I can’t hear the static when I create a new project.

Does the static only appear when you are playing the project, or when it is paused, too?

It might be a plugin, so to narrow it down, you could go track by track (and bus by bus), right-click in every black box where you add plugins, and then select “Deactivate All”:

Alternatively, for a quick check you might want to try opening the project in “Safe Mode” to see if that confirms whether or not a plugin is likely responsible:

yes, I can still hear it when I pause it. and I will do what you suggested.

Yes, then I’d guess it’s a plugin.
Usually amp simulators / distortion pedal simulators (at least for me) do this sort of thing.

Do you have any of those?

No worries, but just one last note:
If that static is coming through during parts of the song where you don’t want it to, then you might want to automate the fader (or other gain control) of that track to go to -Inf where necessary. (-For example, at the beginning and end of the track, or during a quieter section, etc…) (-You can also automate the bypass of the plugin, but this is more abrupt.)

~Peace!

I used to forget I’ve put ChowTape plugin somewhere, just to keep things “analogue”.

Very much freaked me out.
You are not alone.
