I have all my projects synced with a Nextcloud server and I often wondered why some files keep getting changed every time I open the project. It’s understandable with the state files, but why do MIDI files change, even if I do not save the project? In fact, the MIDI file is not even in use, because I only use the printed audio. The MIDI tracks are disabled and hidden. But after I close the project (without saving) Nextcloud starts syncing a lot of files, the MIDI files have a different timestamp. Why?
Unlike Audio, MIDI data in Ardour is destructive, the file may or may not change when you save the session.
Ardour always saves the complete internal state and that rewrites any MIDI data which is part of the session. This usually happens every 2 mins (periodic saves for crash recovery).
