Use a pysical input to change guitar effects

Hello there,

I am using ardour for live jamming and monitoring and it works very great.
For the guitar amp sim I use guitarix.
Now I want to play a song where I need to switch from clean to overdrive sound.
I there a way to accomplish this using some hardware button (DIY?), without buying an effect pedal?
