usb audio JAMLAB / cannot hear input

hi folks!

My first day here and first day using Ardour.

I’m newbie in recording stuff. I play guitar and wanna try to record some stuff I play alone or with my band on rehearsal.
I have basic knowledge of linux OS

problem:
unable to listen track input while recording/playing.

software:
Ubuntu 8.10, ardour 2.5 (built from revision 3525),
JACK Audio Connection Kit - Qt GUI Interface Version: 0.3.2, jack 0.109.2-3ubuntu1

hardware: i386, m-audio jamlab usb audio interface(one input, one headphone output).

I have JACK configured with usb device as interface, input and output (well, there are two usb devices on the list - hw:1,0 USB Audio & hw:1 JamLab - I use the second one but first one works as well). Other settings as follows(only modified - the rest default):

  • Frames/period=128
  • monitor=true

that’s it. server starts, runs with a lot of :

**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
16:36:11.195 XRUN callback (8 skipped).
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs
16:36:11.779 XRUN callback (500).
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1228472852676.608 msecs

in the JACK’s gui log (but this is not the issue).

So having Jack running I start the Ardour, make new mono track and enable recording button on it. Now I can see in level-monitor for single track as well as the master’s level-monitor that the signal comes in while playing my guitar. but I don’t hear anything ;( . If I press record, signal get recorded. Still not hearing anything… Finally, If I start playing recorded stuff I CAN HEAR IT!

Does anybody knows what could be the reason that I don’t hear any signal before?

Best Regards

Options -> Monitor -> Software Monitoring

There is no default setting for this option that will keep everybody happy. You drew the short straw. Let us know if this fixes your issue.

bingo!!!

I’m extremely impressed of the light-fast answer!!!

solution:
go to Options/Monitoring and set ‘Ardour does monitoring’.

Sound comes through.

I also had to set Frames/period to 256 in JACK (by 128 there was some unpleasant sound crack). Now I have latency at 5,8 ms which is more than fine for me.

I also set periods/Buffer in JACK to 4.

You can also go to JACK/Latency directly in Ardour but I didn’t do that.

Now it’s time to rock around with Ardour

Thanx & Best Regards
