So here is my first release ever, as the one-man band “The Void”, and it’s called “alpha centauri”. As for the style, well, I’m not too sure. It’s a mix of a lot of things I listen to, some kind of instrumental ambient bass-driven rock/metal, I guess.
As for the technical details, everything was recorded & mixed with Ardour on Linux openSuse 15.6. The drum tracks are MIDI files I gathered from here and there, run through the DrumGizmo plugin; the soundscapes are done by yours truly using a Chapman Stick with an eBow, and a bunch of effects from a Zoom G1Four pedal. And the bass or the low part of the Stick are also played by myself, running through a Boss bass compressor, a Joyo Double Thruster and a Tech 21 SansAmp. Plugins I use are mostly the Ardour Community ones and those from LSP. The occasional vocal interventions are all me.
As a lover of all art based around notions of interstellar travel, I for one wholly approve of this piece
It’s certainly an interesting listen so nice one eb303 I don’t want to criticise but generally speaking, I think more work can and should be spent on the percussion arrangement (DrumGizmo is fantastic but, in my view, takes some work and to get it sounding as good as it can, just like a real acoustic percussion kit) as well as the mixing overall (to make it more animated, cohesive, unified etc) but that’s just, like, my opinion, man.

I have to admit I’m mostly a musician and all this sound engineer stuff is not really my thing, so I indeed didn’t make any kind of effort on the drum sound. I don’t think there’s even any effect on it, it’s just straight from DrumGizmo, so I hear what you say. And as for the overall mix, well, I don’t have any “formal” training in all this, so basically, I do what I know how to do until things sound “good enough”.
And also, this “project” started mostly as a way to make demos, the objective being to find musicians to play it. But this didn’t really go as planned, and I’m still by myself. But I did send it to a few friends, and they liked it and told me I should make it known to the world, so here I am. But if I had to do a proper release of it, I’d certainly have it at least re-mixed if not re-recorded by someone who knows what they’re doing.

If there’s any piece you make that you’re really happy with but are struggling with the mix, then I’d (probably) enjoy having a go at it so just let me know I’m not a professional (hence I don’t charge) but I think I’d do a decent enough job with this type of music.
