Suggestions to improve MIDI workflow in Ardour v7

I would like to take this opportunity to add my voice for lollipop velocity conception also. If velocity lollipops could be added as some kind of automation track - I could become even happier!

No need for kid gloves, ordinary behavior should be more than enough and it’s no need to be upset… …do one need to use kid gloves when someone speaks to you?

I’m not entirely happy when it comes to the MIDI functionality, but as of version 6, it is what it is and I accept that and use other solutions. Personally, my only wish for version 7 is that a major bug vanishes (first notes don’t play at region start) and that it will be easier to merge regions or possibly to record MIDI in an existing region. Then the workflow will be radically much quicker and streamlined - at least to me.

Speaking for myself (electronic musician), I use the piano roll for almost all my composition work. I didn’t realise this was considered unusual.

Yeah, this is much closer to my workflow and the workflow I’ve seen of other EMs.

Pretty much all of the music I produce is based on direct MIDI editing (working the Piano Roll).

I am aware that there is electronic music that relies on musicians capturing their live performance on an electronic instrument (late Daft Punk’s ā€œRandom Access Memoriesā€ famously was done this way), but most of the music I make and listen to would be impossible without manually placing MIDI notes and other data in a sequencer.
Also a lot of mouse-created automation curves (not recorded).

Examples of my own music that would be impossible without creating MIDI regions with a mouse:

I’ve also made a 2+ hour long video guide about working with MIDI in Ardour and I am paying a lot of attention to manually creating MIDI regions, as it’s my main way of creating sequences.

I am not a classically trained musician (I received training in classical choir singing, but that’s unrelated), my main interface of putting musical ideals into sound is via my mouse and computer keyboard. Sometimes also via singing. I rarely record MIDI data from a keyboard, and if so - I do heavy manual editing of the recorded note afterwards.

I do sometimes record live instruments like guitars, but that’s mostly for client work - manual MIDI editing is still 90% of it.

Frankly - I find it quite ridiculous that we need to prove the importance of direct MIDI editing in modern music production… (no offence).

As you can see I’m quite invested in Ardour, and without it’s direct MIDI capabilities, I wouldn’t even consider it for my work.
