Still hear input when on mute or disk

Hi,
I’m using ardour 6.5 with a focusrite 18i20 3rd gen input. I cannot set monitoring levels in any useful way. I am using ardour to manage monitoring. When I have a track with record enabled, I hear my guitar input and it’s too loud and I’d like to turn it down. When I mute the track, it’s slightly quieter, but still too loud. When I put the track into “disk” mode, it’s also slightly quieter but still too loud. I would expect mute and disk to make the input track silent.

2 questions:
1: why do I still hear the input when mute or disk are selected?
2: how do I use ardour to set my monitoring so I can adjust how much of the input I hear in my headphones, while keeping the playback at its normal volume?

Likely because the signal is also passed through via another way.

  • Does this also happen when Ardour is not running?
The Scarlett series allows for direct hardware monitoring, passing though input to output as-is. You can change this with the Focusrite MixControl app.

  • Does it also happen with a new empty Ardour session?
If not, perhaps your current has a hidden track that is also monitoring input, or a direct connection from input to master-bus.

I figured it out. The focusrite will do what it’s set to do, no matter what, even if you switch to having ardour manage monitoring. Since I use linux and focusrite doesn’t have a control program for linux, I have to connect to it using a mac to set the monitor inputs. If I set it to only monitor daw in the hardware, I now have complete control over monitoring in ardour. The problem really comes from being unfamiliar with the focusrite and the fact that the focusrite doesn’t have a monitor mix knob the way most inputs do.
