what happened to the speaker icon for audition mode? how does one audition/scrub audio?
KC
Ardour does not support scrubbing at this time (it used to; it may do so again).
Audition at this time basically means “click on region to listen to it”
I often use it to edit sound files
hope it returns

I noticed during the installation of 8.10 that I could choose to replace a previous version or install alongside a current version (obviously, I chose to replace)
is it possible to re-install an earlier version of Ardour w/o clobbering 8.10?
KC
Yes, as long as you still have the installer file (the Ardour web site does not provide downloads for older installers, only the most recent).
I might have trashed it - oh well, I’ll try to find a workaround. Thanks for the info!
update: I have a.8.6 run file…any gotchas during an install I should be aware of?
Just make sure you read the messages and don’t hit Y if it asks you whether you want to remove the existing installation it found.
That tool was pretty much useless and never worked reliably.
These days you can press A
to audition a section or region selection. This now uses solo/mute logic to take layers into account if you use a range.
Alternatively to “scrub” you can move the mouse over the timeline and keep pressing the P
key.
strange, while it mosdef could use some finessing, it served me well when hunting down waveform glitches. I really hope it makes a comeback because I like having all my audio editing in one environment, and I’m an Ardour fanboy
I’ll try the mouse over timeline + P key for auditioning - thanks Robin!
got it - and thanks again!
Robin is this purely positional scrubbing…I don’t hear any audio pressing P and mousing over the timeline…or is that expected behavior?
KC
P positions the playhead only.
if you turn on auto-play, any locate will start playing right away.
ah OK got it…I vote for the scrub/audition tool making a comeback - it makes audio forensics so much easier, even if it was imperfect.
I just launched Ardour7 to check again, and it was completely broken, same in Ardour6.
It just gets stuck at some -80 semitone playback as soon as you start a scrub-drag.
Single-click audition works though.
Ardour5 was the last version where it worked to some extent. basically it was just setting vari-speed control though. You can achieve the same using the vari-speed slider.

That being said a proper scrub mode would be nice, especially for video editing.
