When I have sound problems, typically all it takes is opening alsamixer to get things back. However, every time I open Ardour, my sound options go from Headphones and Speakers to “Dummy output.” I’ve tried selecting Jack, Pipewave etc in the initial setup, but that just throws an error with my Midi controller.
What diagnostic information can I gather to troubleshoot this? I have made sure my kernel is updated to the most recent available to standard users.

Your sound options where? If you mean the system sound server, then that likely means you started Ardour with the ALSA backend and Ardour requested exclusive access to the sound interface.
What sound server does your distribution use? Has it switched to Pipewire already? If so, which version? Do you also have pipewire-jack installed? If not do you have jackd installed?
Do you even care if other applications can access the audio interface at the same time as Ardour? What exactly is the use case you are trying to enable?
