Sorting order of Take ID in sources list

Dear all,

let me start my initial post with a friendly hello to the Ardour community and best wishes for 2026…and for the rest of 2025 as well of course

I have just started using Linux and Ardour and made some recordings today. What I do not understand is the sorting order in the sources list. I was expecting that pressing the header of the Take ID column, would sort the takes chronologically. However this does not fully seem to work, no matter what order I choose:

Having searched the forum for “Take ID” did not bring up any helpful result, so maybe it is me…? What am I missing? I just would like the latest take to show up on top of that list

Looks like it is the take sorted by the track it was recorded on. Which makes sense to me, though I understand your point as well. Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you on it overall.

Thanks for your reply, though I am not quite sure if I understand your explanation.

I recorded one guitar with two mics simultaneously (X1 and M3). Each mic has its own track which are labelled “guitar-X1” and “guitar-M3” and both tracks are in one group. In the screenshot below, what would be the the “track” you are referring to?

I guess I am looking at the wrong column, but no matter by what column I sort, I am not able to see the logic.

However, when I sort the list by track, that column alternates between the two tracks (not my understanding of sorting), but the Take-Id gets perfectly chronologically sorted and shows the latest take on top …

PS: it would be very handy if all columns could be adjusted in size, and maybe even be movable, so that one can move the personal favorites to the most left and then minimize the sidebar. Not sure if this is a bug but maybe there is a “feature request” area in this forum, that I haven’t found yet.

It’'s indeed weird that the sorting doesn’t work. It’s probably a bug or something like that.

The good news is that in the upcoming Ardour 9 it works like expected (tested 9.0rc2.26).

Thanks for both, the confirmation that I haven’t missed anything and the promising outlook
