SOLVED: Ardour freezes trying to automate Plugins in the Mixer

I’ m still relatively new to Ardour and I’m learning all the time.

I thought I’d share my latest experience since I find it not without significance: I tried to automate plugins by editing them in the Mixer, simply clicking on “write” in the dialogue, and Ardour froze regularly after a minute or so.

It took me some time to realize that you have to click the “A” button of a track in the Editor, chose “processor automation”, click on the respective plugin, check the functions you want to automate, and do the automation in the Editor. Since I do it this way, I have no more issues.

It seems though that my graphics card is a bit outdated. Especially scrolling in the Editor takes ages, there’s a huge delay and if you’re not carefull with the mouse wheel you overshoot completely.

I’m using Debian 11, and since No. 10 the required legacy Nvidia graphics driver for my card is no longer supported by Debian. And it looks like the free Nouveau driver doesn’t do the acceleration job too well.

The table of processes constantly reads about 60% CPU usage by the Ardour GUI and 70% by Xorg (it’s a dual core CPU and the system counts a maximum of 200%). The CPU usage by Xorg is understandable, there’s a lot to do, but I think I should go and buy something more contemporary for my Lenovo S10 than the Nvidia Quadro FX series.

That’s all for today folks, please come to our next LP!
(Quiz: On which vinyl disk do you find this phrase if you play the relevant groove backwards? A bit off-topic, but hey, for the fun of it!)

Cheears!
