Set Rec mode per track type

Hi! I find myself almost always using Snd on Snd mode when recording MIDI, and Layered mode when recording audio.

Is there a setting that allows me to preconfigure the recording mode per track type, so that when I add a new MIDI track, it is always in Snd on snd mode, or an audio track always in Layered mode?

Preferably, the setting should be locked to the track in question, so that when I select the MIDI track, it is still in Snd on snd mode after having recorded in Layered mode on another (audio) track.

Many thanks in advance.

I wonder if it be possible accomplish this goal via a Lua “action hook”

I can’t seem to see any of the signal types which would correspond to “individual track is record-enabled”, nor do I have a notion what the Right Thing™ would be if the user record-armed both MIDI and Audio tracks.

Interesting. I might do some Chat GPT Lua scripting and see if I can come up with anything. If so, I’ll post the results.

I think this is a good idea.

The only downside to making this a per-track setting is that there also needs to be some clear indication. Otherwise it’s too easy to accidentally use the wrong record-mode.

just some ideas:

  1. menu like current playlist management where you can look at all tracks and configure at once.
  2. select tracks > configure at current place of configuration (but it means, click this track, select mode, click another set of tracks, select mode etc) -
    i’d prefer first approach

about indication:

  1. append small visual distinction to track record/arm button (in any corner) (color would not be ok due to different themes i guess?)
  2. point 1 would be good indicator (but it would require you to open it)

In my mind, having the record-mode setting be configurable on each track seems like a reasonable idea (maybe in a multi-state option, where the default is “follow the global option”, and one can get back to that choice). The track UI would likely need to add some bling which made a per-track override clear.

I don’t know the code well enough to guess how hard such a feature would be to implement (like I could guess anything about the cost of adding any feature to Ardour). I’ve been beaten with the “surely it’s just a simple matter of programming” often enough in other projects that I’ll never do that willingly to somebody else.
