I just tried to install an rt kernel but nothing happened. I have ubuntu could that be a reason, all I know is that the terminal said it was done and I rebooted and did not see an RT kernel to boot into, thanks for your time

Got it! I just needed to run the update manager, and that fixed my problem thank you.
