RT kernel necessary for Ardour & JACK

I’ve been having trouble getting an audio signal into Ardour 6 from a first generation Scarlett 2i4; I have no problems with Ardour 5.12. Is it necessary to choose the RT option for Ardour 6?

No, you do not need a realtime-kernel (aka preempt-rt kernel), but your user needs to able to grant JACK (or Ardour) realtime process permissions.

The long story: https://jackaudio.org/faq/linux_rt_config.html

On debian based distros (such as Ubuntu) it’s as simple as

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -p high jackd2

Say “yes” to Enable realtime process priority, and then re-login (or reboot).

Thanks. I’ll give that a try.

Robin, is there a way to group all these separate conversations from @Duke_Of_Sound together? It feels a little like the same issue is being spread over two conversations…I’m replying to one and finding out related questions are being posed and answered elsewhere. No fault of anyone and just trying to think of the best way to collect together these issues so most helpful to future visitors to the forum.
