Region resize edge 'grabbability' in Ardour 9.2

Hi,

I updated our Studio box to an Ardour 9.2 nightly (9.2.18) and this is my first extended use of Ardour 9+. For me grabbing the edges of regions to resize them is very difficult, hovering the mouse will change the cursor for fades as easily as always but unless I repeatedly change the amount of timeline zoom the cursor is very stubborn to change to the resize mode. Anybody else notice this?

Yes. I have noticed it since the rc-9 series. I can’t find a recipe to reliably reproduce this. For me it happens mostly with freshly opened sessions (created with older versions).

To resize a region I have to first start a fade, than it works normally. The bug happens only the first time I try to resize a specific region. But not every region. It seems random, I have to test more when I have more time.

Yes for me triggering a fade also seems to enable resizing but not always. For a minor bug this is very annoying if you’re tracking or editing lots of regions

Was it a session newly recorded with Ardour 9 or an already existing one?

So far observed in new sessions.

For me, in KDE/Plasma it’s been like this since virtually ever… very hard to point the mouse to either resize or change the region fade. I always thought it’s my mouse that causes that, as the pointer seems to stick, then jump a few pixels already at an ever so slight movement… just saying, annoying but I thought it’s local and got used to that (I’m a patient person generally)

For me this is definitely a new issue in A9, it definitely did not behave this way in A8 including 8.12.

Could adjusting the “drag deadzone” setting in Preferences help resolve the region edge resizing

In Ardour, under Preferences → Size and Scale → User Interface Size and Scale, you’ll find:

Drag deadzone – defines how many pixels the pointer must move before a drag (or copy-drag) starts. .??

oh I wasn’t aware of that (even though I translated the corresponding UI text strings), how cool, thanks!
It definitely improves my experience  )

Thanks Mika I will look at that setting when I can get to that computer.

OK,

Finally got back to the Studio and setting the Drag Deadzone doesn’t really fix this problem. The cursor is still very stubborn to change to resize mode. It improves slightly if I draw a crossfade first or if I change the timeline zoom. It’s kinda driving me nuts…
