real time kernel versus optimized generic kernel:
As Ubuntu Studio is moving towards an optimized generic kernel, does anyone have any recommendations, feedback on or experience with using this optimized generic kernel versus an RT kernel for live recording setup using Ardour? any latency advantages/stability?
Background
As Ubuntu studio stated in its phase out of lowlatency.
the generic kernel includes kernel parameters added upon boot that allow the kernel to act in a lowlatency mode
I am using the liquorix kernel. I don’t turn on threadirqs at boot time because it tends to make things worse in my case. I don’t see xruns often, only when running tons of audio synth and other electronic music plugins in Bitwig. When it comes to pure recording in Ardour, nothing. I have Bitwig running on another machine than the one running Ardour and usually, it is doing fine but I need to upgrade it to a newer and more efficient machine … I am looking at this one:
HP OmniBook Ultra Flip U7 258V / 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD. I got one for my wife a while back but she prefers Windows. I have installed Bitwig and Arturia soft synths on it for her own use. It works just fine and is not heating up much, but I use debian so I still have to check that this machine has no issues with linux.
