Protecting gear from extreme solar storms?

Given the recent Carrington-class activity, has anyone here established a “red alert” protocol for their studio? I’m curious if you rely on total physical disconnection of all cables or if you’ve gone as far as using Faraday storage for critical drives and interfaces to protect against induced currents.

A Faraday cage storage solution is never a bad idea.

But I’d bet that if a solar storm managed to significantly damage your equipment or the songs you’re working on, then you and society are gonna have waaaaaaayyyyyyyy bigger problems at hand. :face_with_spiral_eyes: :face_with_diagonal_mouth: :upside_down_face: :man_shrugging:

But by all means, go for whatever solutions/protections you can conjure!

I have never heard that anything shorter than telecom or power distribution cable lengths would have a problem. Have you heard differently?

From the wonderful world of the internet, all kinds of things are heard — some true, some less so. But who is the last recording studio in the realm with the lights still on and the coffee maker still brewing? Is it powered by open source? :smirk:

Fair point.
If a solar storm really wiped out the gear and the songs, I think we’d all have much bigger things to worry about than recording.

Still, better safe than sorry. And who knows — being the last studio still running might come in handy.

Lights are on, backups are done, and we’ll see what happens.

Also never underestimate the fun of meeting friends, have some brew and play acoustic instruments. Granted, not much of an electronic recording studio and more a fallback than a protection. But it will record lasting memories in a distributed organic medium :stuck_out_tongue:

Ok, I will find the way out on my own…

Only for my geostationary studios. Low orbit and surface conditions are by far less dangerous for my equipment than any place infested with musicians and their pals.
