Ardour 8.12-3. Did a plugin rescan. But why does it take so long (about 5 minutes)?
Should be finished in a few seconds on a modern 8 Core CPU…

Ardour instantiates each and every VST2 and VST3 plugin, test-runs, and then unloads the plugin. This can take a long time, and is not usually limited by CPU. 5 and more minutes are not unreard of, if you have many plugins installed.
LV2 plugins should scan near instantly though.

Is this a one time operation and the result is cached, or is this on every run?
It is a one time operation, and the result is cached from then on.
Updating a VST2/3 plugin requires to re-scan only the updated plugin.
