Hi,
I’m a relative newbie myself, but I do know that an ISO file needs to be burned to a CD (or if it’s Ubuntu Studio a DVD because it’s a little too big). You can do this with loads of different software, I personally use cdburnerxp which works well for me (http://cdburnerxp.se/). It’s very straightforward, and if you google “burn iso to disc” you’ll find lots of info. This will create a bootable disc for linux installation.
I assume that you still have XP installed in order to create the disc? One possible recommendation - you might want to create a dual boot system which is very easy to do - the linux install guides you through this. That way you have linux and xp on the same machine. My personal experience is that linux is great but takes some getting used to, and it’s useful to have windows there when you need something done urgently and find you cannot do it immediately in linux.
Cheers and good luck,
Neil
I don’t think it is a good idea for you to try to install ardour from source, to say nothing of mounting a .iso (?). Just rely on your distro and install ardour with the Package Management software they provide. I think you’ll have synaptic, which has a user-friendly GUI. Search for it in your applications menu. Then search for ardour. Synaptic will download and install this application and maybe some others which are needed for ardour (the so-called dependencies). Linux distros make it much easier to get the things done for the average PC user. Anyway, you have to consider first what distro fits best your needs. If multimedia in general and ardour in particular are very important for you, you should consider a suitable distro for this kind of apps. You have Ubuntustudio and more. Check the thread http://ardour.org/node/698 just to have an idea of which are the favourite distros of some ardour users.
Anyway, at this stage you will probably be better adviced in your distro’s forums than here, because I guess your difficulty is not how to install ardour but how to install any package at all.
Good luck!
ah i get it…wow that was a look easier thanks guys
well i can’t select Ardour in the add/remove programs. any suggestions on that?
Ask at your distro’s forums. This is not really an ardour related question. Maybe you have to add the ubuntustudio repository?
Sorry, I’m not an ubuntu user.
Pablo
ok thanks
If the prospect of typing things on a command line doesn’t scare you, then go to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
and type
sudo apt-get install ardour -y
If that does scare you, then go to
System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
Then click the Search button, type ardour
Right click on ardour in the list, and click Mark for Installation.
Then click the Apply button at the top.
These two methods do exactly the same thing, and work for most software in Ubuntu.
However, it’s probably better to wipe Ubuntu completely and instead install Ubuntu Studio from a DVD - that way you get a whole operating system optimised for audio (and video, if you want that.) It is possible to convert an Ubuntu installation into an Ubuntu Studio one, and it’s not actually all that difficult, but if you’re starting from scratch with Linux I wouldn’t recommend it.
