I apologize I am finding many things during my testing.
Not sure how many forum / Mantis posts worth making.
In trying to play selected regions / range selections I looked into shortcuts available.
In the past I started out using this shortcut found in Editor section Play Selected Regions
but soon found out that this does what it says, works for selected regions only, not Range Mode selections.
(Just thought about it, that this probably answers questioned I asked about why there was also shortcut in Region section, but this still does not accomplish what I am looking for)
I then started using the following Play Selection
which works for both selected regions and Range Mode selections.
(I thought this worked as expected but tried in 8.12 and 9 rc and both function the same, see below)
However, did not realize this until started testing stacked audio tracks that both of the above shortcuts do not just play that specific selected region / Range Mode selection, it plays any tracks within that section of the timeline.
For example if you add a snare sample to an audio track, and then copy that snare sample to track below and move it to the right a little. If you select the original snare region and apply either of these 2 shortcuts, it will play the original snare and a portion of the sample copy below.
Is there a shortcut that ONLY plays selected region(s) and Range Mode selections?
If not please let me know so I can create a Mantis post for this topic.
As noted previously, selections of different kinds of objects are generally exclusive in Ardour, so you can never have both selected regions and a selected range.
If you have a selected range, then by definition, “Play selection” will play everything in that range, and no regions will be selected. If you have selected regions, then “Play Selection” will play them, and there is no range selection.

Thank you for response
No I am aware that a region and a Range Mode selection cannot be selected at the same time.
(I apologize if this already exists)
The idea is that I would like to be able to only hear the selected region(s) / range selection of the specific tracks they are in.
As if they were soloed, but ideally do not want to have to manually play with solo toggles in these scenarios.
Just a very basic example TRACK LAYOUT
Say you have 3 tracks with the following 3 regions in them, where each of the region beginnings align with each other
[Kick]
[Snare1] [Snare2]
[Bass]
REGION EXAMPLE
-Say I select [Snare1] region
-I want to hit a shortcut that ONLY plays that region, and not the region above / below it
(Would also work for example if [Bass] region was also selected, in this case then the snare and bass would be heard but not the kick region)
RANGE SELECTION EXAMPLE
-With the Range Mode say I make a selection from the middle of [Snare1] to the middle of [Snare2] region
-I want to hit a shortcut that ONLY plays that selected range of that specific track, and not the range above / below it.
(Would also work for example if [Bass] region was also included in that range selection, in this case then the snare and bass would be heard, but not the kick region)
For me the following three actions all produce the same results, they each play all 3 regions at the same time. Play Selected Regions (Editor version) Play Selected Regions (Region version) Play Selection (Shortcut / Transport button)
Again without having anytthing to do with soloing tracks.
Can this be done with a specific keybinding?
If someone could let me know if I should make a Mantis post about this.
