Persistent track routing between sesisons

Not sure if this is a common problem, but every now and then (especially on the second time ever opening a session) the audio track routing will get scrambled.

E.g. maybe I’ve got a couple of bass tracks going into a bus which then goes into the master bus, and after saving, quitting Ardour, and reloading the session without changing anything about the audio interface, audio server settings etc., on the next time I open the session there’s a really good chance one of those bass tracks will be routed to both master bus and the bass bus.

Also, I believe I’ve seen cases where if you duplicate a track that was going into one bus, re-route it, save the project, close & re-open, it will remember both the old routing and the new one so that you get double-bus outputs the next time you open the project.

At the very least on my system there seems to be some issues with persistent track routing so I wanted to ask if anyone else has any tips/tricks on how to deal with this.

This is unusual.

  • Which version of Ardour do you use?
  • What Audio/MIDI backend (menu > Window > Audio/MIDI Setup) do you use?

Right now I’ve got Ardour 8.12.0 with an ALSA backend:

Let me guess, as a part of this, you changed the track/bus names, yeah?
-Then saved, quit, and reopened?

Well, I have good news for you!

What you’re describing was almost certainly this same thing that I discovered and reported here, and something that @x42 (Robin) 100% solved several months back: 0009961: New bus names are sometimes not saved into the XML universally, thus causing major routing losses... - MantisBT

→ So the ultimate tip here is to begin using the latest nightly build of Ardour 9!

This issue was certainly infuriating, as upon the second opening of the session, precisely as you point-out (…or more accurately after opening it up again after having made any track/bus name changes), many routes would be wrong and old or broken and whatnot…

I can happily confirm that yes, this is now 100% fixed in the current builds of Ardour 9.
So try it out and see if what you’re describing is resolved.

This is very likely what’s happening! I tend to create tracks in groups and then rename as needed

Correct! haha
Who doesn’t?

I tried to explain this to Robin at the time. : P
But he’s clearly an Ardour noob, so I try to go easy on him!
