Performance problems (solved)

Pretty much built my PC around using Ardour (love 8.10 by the way) and specs are;
Xeon CPU E5-2667 v3 @ 3.20GHz 8-core
64Gb DDR4 ram
Scarlett 2i4 usb
Nvidia 1070 8Gb
running AV MX Linux 21.10 (xfce)

But I still find that after setting out a few tracks, I usually start with a template of around 25 tracks inc AVL drums (9) and after recording both midi and audio, I start to get a lot of screen lag when scrolling up and down the tracks. Sometimes it gets so bad that I scroll down, let go of the mouse and have to sit and wait for the scroll to complete its way down.
Was working on a project last night, cpu load did not get above 22% but there were 110 errors, which might be a clue?
Any suggestions as to where I can track down the problem? Am happy to upgrade my PC if it needs it, but from watching a few youtube guides, my PC seems powerful enough to cope with what Ardour requires. My son occasionally boots into a different distro and runs quite demanding games which the system seems to perform very smoothly…

Also, after reading a few posts on performance, could anyone recommend a decent set of hardware specs to get the most out of Ardour? Most of the posts I have read tend to focus on single items of hardware but it would be nice to know what a system would look like that would not suffer from any performance issues…

What were the errors?

The screen lag could possibly be a driver issue; check if AVL uses the Nouveau driver for your Nvidia card.
Your son most likely has Nvidia’s own driver installed for his games.

The Noveau driver should be just fine for non-3D-work but that could be the culprit.

Thanks Peder, will kick son off PC and take a look, had not thought to check graphics driver…

Yeees…! That was it Peder… My son just told me he changed the driver a while ago as he was ‘trying out something’… sigh… Nouveau driver was being used, popped in the Nvidia one and all is quick and slick now, as a bonus, my son feels guilty enough to do the washing up…
Thanks again Peder…

Yet another bonus, DSP is now down to 18% (from 22%), am guessing the cpu has been freed up a little more now the GPU is working properly…
