I had earlier by chance the configuration that on the same Track different slices put on top of each other could play back in parallel without interrupting one another. Where is that magic button to make this happen? 
Layered regions on a track can be audibly transparent (as opposed to opaque), that way you also hear regions below.
For existing regions: Select region(s): Main Menu > Region > Gain > Opaque
or right-click on the selected region(s) > Gain > Opaque or use Alt+0 keyboard shortcut.
When recording new regions, you can change the record mode to “Sound on Sound” in the dropdown in the Editor’s Application bar (default is “Layered”).
