Drums with AVL Blond Bop (many thanks to @GMaq Glen MacArthur!)
Hi Peter,
Another great complete production, Audio, Video, Mixing, great stuff! Glad to see some new stuff from you! Belated congrats to your friends!
Thanks a lot … and looking back almost each of my works is featuring one of the AVL drum kits.
Now and again I try Drumgizmo but give up quickly and come back to these very convenient tools. Makes rhythmic life much easier.
And having 3 (4?) of them I can quickly check which one suits best a given song,
Everyone should try them out: x42 AVL Drumkits
Thanks Peter, that is high praise and I’m thankful you find them useful!
I would say that the Blonde Bop(s) are definitely a cut above the others and I definitely had better quality control and a more cohesive idea of what I wanted all the way though the process. The Red Zep and Black Pearl were originally sampled for my own use with Hydrogen and it wasn’t until later that they were made into Robin’s excellent Plugins. I think they definitely need to be revisited (we still have both kits here) with some of the better recording techniques learned with the Bop kit.
I personally am not happy specifically with how the Ride Cymbal samples are handled in the Soundfonts currently, they sound truncated and weird to me vs. using the exact same kit samples in Hydrogen or in an SFZ file. I’m not sure whether this is a sample length or other limitation in the ancient Soundfont specs or something else but there is definitely a difference. I also don’t hear these anomalies when the same Blonde Bop mapped MIDI files are played in Addictive Drums 2 so I know it is not in the MIDI programming itself.
When I get around to more work on the Drumkits I will need to investigate further…
Not being a drummer I have not paid attention to this yet. Most of the time I prefer hihats over ride abyway.
It’s not easy to program drums when you don’t know how to play them.
Actually I heard stories about an album from Gary Moore that no drummer could replicate live 'caus the progrsmming was kind of weird (maybe it was “Over the hills”?)
