Multitrack recording with flexible tempo, single person

Do you have tips for a single person recording multiple tracks with a flexible tempo?

On the piece I’m recording right now, the first trumpet may start the phrase, but then a second trumpet, or keyboard maintains the tempo during a long notes in the first trumpet. Since I’m playing/recording all parts, I have to record at least one part first.

In a live performance with multiple people, we would follow each other’s tempos naturally. What do you recommend in this case?

If you know where you want the tempo changes, you could either map the tempo changes in the ardour timeline and use the metronome, or just record a click track using a keyboard, microphone and percussion, etc. to follow as you record the other tracks.
