MIDI volume way too soft... how can I fix it?

Hello,

Help would be greatly appreciated. I am an Ardour newbie.

I am using Ardour 6.5.0 for playing MIDI messages coming from Supercollider and a Behringer DeepMind 12 used as a MIDI keyboard. I have tried to do so with jack/a2jmidid and also only with alsa. MIDI messages are received fine, but the output volume is very very low… the volume meters on the MIDI tracks/Master track are barely moving though if I put the volume gain to its maximum I can actually hear the external keyboard and supercollider’s MIDI messages. I have tried with several MIDI instruments/synths:

  • a custom SF2 file with ACE Fluid Synth, a random instrument with ZynnAddSubFx and ACE Reasonable Synth. MIDI monitor seems to be just fine as well.

All the best,

Xiu/Maria

Can you tell what the note velocity range is from the MIDI monitor?

With MIDI there are two different things you have to verify:
First, the MIDI data, that is, what is the equivalent key velocity which is being sent to the sound generator?

Second is the gain staging, that is what signal level is being generated in response to that MIDI data (either analog signal from an external synthesizer, or the digital signal level generated by a software synthesizer, then sent through whatever path you have setup to your listening hardware).

Dear Chris,

Thank you for helping a newbie!
Yes… the problem was my MIDI controller… was sending a velocity way too low. For the moment everything is fixed!

Thanks again!
