Hi folks,
I am in the process of learning Ardour and setting up hardware to work with it.
I have bought a midi controller keyboard and a sustain pedal to use with Ardour and am not sure how to record sustain information with the pedal.
What I expect to happen:
The midi note I am recording ends when the pedal is released.
Pushing the sustain pedal down sustains the note, both as it is monitored and as it is recorded as midi information.
What is actually happening:
The midi note I am recording ends when the key is released
Pushing the sustain pedal down sustains the note only as it is monitored during recording and playback. It does not elongate the midi note as it is recorded.
How can I record sustain as it made by the pedal in my midi track?
I hope that makes sense and many thanks for your help.
Software: Ardour version 8.6.0
OS: Debian 12
Hardware: M-Audio Oxygen Pro 49 Midi keyboard controller with M-Audio sustain pedal (unsure of model).
Don’t have an exact answer to your query, but general info for you to understand what you are seeing:
Typically the Sustain Pedal if sent through MIDI is sent as CC 64 IIRC. So most synths should respect the CC for the Sustain Pedal, but the actual Key Down and Key Up events will be based off the key position.
This is correct. Sustain pedal does not change how long you press the key (on a actual piano sustain just releases the dampers). When you move the finger away from a key, a MIDI note off event is created.
Sustain is recorded as separate event (pedal up, pedal down). You can show it using the "A"utomation menu in Ardour, it is listed under Controllers:
e.g. Here the pedal is pressed before playing the “A”, and the following notes are sustained…
