MIDI channels to Mixer channels

I thought I remember reading someone asking about this and it was said to not be possible, but I just want to ask again just to make sure.

I am correct in saying that there is no way in Ardour/in general to be able to send MIDI Channels (1-16) to separate Mixer channels?
Similiar to how certain plugins, such as Drum samplers provide multi outs to Mixer Channels. There is no way to get a MIDI channel to function in a similar way, if user wanted to for example apply an effect to only the MIDI data being played from MIDI Channel 12.

Again I do not think MIDI channels function in this way but just wanted to make sure.

Thank You

Sure, it’s entirely possible and quite easy. The right way to do it will depend on precisely what you’re trying to do.

If you right click in a MIDI track header, there is a channel selector that can alter the behavior of the track so that it handles only 1 channel (and much more). This may be appropriate for your needs.

Alternatively, you can add the MIDI channel filter from x42 to a MIDI bus or track before the instrument or other MIDI-handling plugins, to limit which channel messages it sees.

Connect your multi-channel MIDI source to reach bus or track, and each one will only handle what you tell it to.

There are some nuances to this (e.g. what actually ends up on risk in certain scenarios) that I have not explained here.

Hey Paul, thank you for your response.
I had seen other people solving some MIDI issues by using the MIDI channel filter plugin you mentioned, but I was not even thinking about that.
Also something I overlooked was the Channel Selector you mentioned, I was not aware of this. This appears to basically perform the similar function of the MIDI channel filter but is built into Ardour itself which is nice. I still have to test this out a little bit more, but also as you mentioned it can do some other things as well which I have some ideas for some possible ways to use this for other purposes.
Thank you again for letting me know about this.
