MIDI->audio inserts

I want to use zynaddsubfx with Ardour. I added MIDI track (without instrument) and insert on it. I added 2 audio ports on insert input. I connected insert_midi_out->zynaddsubfx_in, zynaddsubfx_out1->insert_audio_in1 and zynaddsubfx_out2->insert_audio_in2.

However, it doesn’t work. When I send MIDI data to track input, I can’t hear anything. Level meters in zynaddsubfx show that nothing is played. When I use screen keyboard in zynaddsubfx, synth obviously works but audio doesn’t go to Ardour so I can’t hear anything either.

So the question is: what is the correct way to use JACK instruments with Ardour? Do I have to use additional bus that receives audio from the instrument?

adiblol: mixing audio + MIDI this way isn’t going to work in the version of ardour that you are using (nor in any version you could get your hands on at this time). in addition, the MIDI track does not send incoming data through its signal processing stream under these conditions.

for now, use a separate track for the MIDI and the audio. hook the MIDI track outputs to zyn, hook zyn’s output the input of the audio track.

and then pray for (and ask the right people nicely) for an LV2 version of zyn.

What about using an audio+midi track. I know it says “only use this if you intent on using a plugin that uses audio and midi” however when you create a stereo or mono audo midi track. If you look at the patchbay, there are midi in and out ports for that track, and also audio in and out.

From that it looks like it would be possible to route ardours midi out to zyn, and zyns audio to the track.

When it comes to inserts i keep them for compression/gates or for graphics on monitor sends. everything else like fx and instruments are connected to inputs. But thats just my worklow from years of working with analogue desks in the live industry.
