Metering in Ardour

I have just read the following in the manual:

“Just like in the mixer channel view, tracks and regular audio busses default to Peak (+6 dBFS) …”

Does that mean I have a headroom of 6 db at 0db?

Ardour, like more or less all DAWs and all plugins, uses 32 bit floating point for its internal data format. That means you have effectively almost infinite headroom before clipping occurs. The +6dB is merely a convention that we chose.

Of course, if you deliver more than 0dB to a hardware audio interface, or export it to an audio file in most common formats, you have no headroom at all and it will clip.

This means that the way I have handled it so far is correct: I level my signals coming from my interface at approx. -9db.
