Making a mono recording sound more "Stereo"

Sorry for the rather ignorant question. I am renovating some old mono recordings using ardour, I have no problem creating a stereo signal, but is there something I can do to make it “sound more stereo”? Is there a plugin I can use?

Also if the original recording is rather dry, adding stereo reverb with maximum reverb width (L-R difference) is effective.

Possibly one of the Calf “tools” (http://calf.sourceforge.net/plugins.html#tools - only available in git I think) or jamin (use as an insert) could be used.
