I want to set a cut through all layers in a recording with multiple layers. How can I do this? When I select the Cut tool, only one layer is editable.
I think this should work: Select all the regions you want to split with the grab tool. Then position the cursor where you want to set the cut and hit “s” on the keyboard to seperate the regions at the given position.
My preferred method is to use the Range tool. The Range tool cuts through all layers. Select a Range and choose ‘S’ to split on the range start & end. The only downside to this is: you have to know where you want 2 cuts (start and end). For me this is not a problem: in most cases, I’m using the range tool to select some silence between phrases, and I Delete it.
If you want to split at a single point, and you don’t want to have to select regions (as toxonic suggested) then you can instead use this method: set your Edit Point to Playhead, and then select the Track headers for the Tracks that you want to split. Then the Split action will operate on the TRACK which means it will split all the regions at that point.
Here are the various combinations and tools for splitting:
-
Range Tool (shortcut R) and Split (shortcut S) splits both ends of time selection which can span multiple tracks.
-
Grab tool (Shortcut G) and Split (shortcut S) splits only the selected regions either at the Mouse position or the Playhead position, depending on the setting of your Edit Point.
-
Range OR Grab tool, with track selected, and EP=Playhead, plus the Split action (shortcut S) will split all selected regions (cutting thru layers) under the playhead
-
Cut tool (shortcut C): clicking anywhere with the cut tool always splits the topmost region under your Mouse position, totally ignoring the Edit Point selection, layering or region selections.
Thanks a lot!
