Keeping track of playhead position externaly?

I am performing live with ardour and my sets can extend to time periods longer then 3 hours. (The structure is pre arranged)
So far ardour did never crash during performance but i would like to have some option to keep track of how far i am into the set in case i have to restart ardour.
Does somebody know of a software that i could sync with (maybe through mtc?) which could tell me how long i was into the set when ardour crashed?

Which audio/MIDI backend do you use?

I am using jack2 and the midi driver in qjackctl says raw.

I am not sure about this, but I think you can send the transport frame through OSC and local network to any kind of software that can receive it: The Ardour Manual
A plugdata patch for example would be cross platform compatible and be able to store that info on the background and send it back once you re open your session with a click.

Thanks for the reply! I did not think about pd but that would have been a good solution also! I just had another look into the ardour manual.
I found a great solution with using jack as a timecode master and having the time displayed in qjackctl.
No additional software required. :ok_hand:
It seems i don’t even have to find the spot where the playhead was before since jack would save that and i can just hit play in qjackctl.
But this i have to test once ardour crashes.

You could run killall -9 Ardour8 or similar, and then check if it works. Obviously, you should not try this during a live set, and also not when you would lose precious work. i.e. only run a command like this after you have saved your work (or, in this case, a dummy session would suffice to test).
