after I have done my punch ins I would like to join the two regions. I hear there is a way to do this now but I can’t find it.

you question isn’t really very clear - its hard to tell what you want to actually accomplish.
ardour 2.X has no way to “join” regions. you can certainly overlap them (and create/edit the transition between them). if for some reason you really need to make a single region from several others, there is an edit operation called “Consolidate” which will create a new audio file from the selected regions in a track, and replace them all with a single region representing that region.
however, depending on what you actually want to accomplish, its not clear that this is the right approach to take.
