now what is a newcomer supposed to do with this? does anyone even know what this means? all i want to do is connect a damn usb device, I dont want to infiltrate the north korean secret police.

This has nothing directly to do with Ardour, but is related to your use of JACK. It appears that you tried to tell JACK to use "/dev/audio" which is completely non-sensical and probably caused by you reading some decade-old documentation on Linux audio. JACK does not use this name by default.

Normal names for the device given to JACK are (for example) "hw:0" or "hw:DAC" or "hw:DSP" or "hw:Fasttrack Pro". See this FAQ entry on how to use a persistent name for your device http://jackaudio.org/faq/device_naming.html

thanks paul, let me change that and see what happens

i changed it and you are right. BUT i think the error was coming from the fact that i had turned on ‘start jack as soon as program starts’. It didnt like this at all. thank you for your help

@Dunnery

Well if the settings were wrong, which it sounds like they were, then yes starting Jack as soon as program starts would still cause errors once you started the program. The settings would be the main cause of the error, starting it when the program started just caused it to happen quicker.
