hello there I payed for 7.3 before I registered. Now I tried downloading 7.4 and got message: “We’re sorry, that invoice ID does not allow for downloading this version of Ardour.” Is this correct? I thought point releases were included.
I wrote this in the mail to Paul Davis, but he answered, that he was travelling and I should ask in the forum.
I guess I’m unclear … I have never “paid” an invoice for Ardour. I’ve made a goodwill $$ contribution, but Ardour is “free ware” so why would you even worry about what an invoice says?
What OS are you using? In Linux, one can simply download and use the app in several different ways without an explicit payment requirement.
I am using Ubuntu 20.04.
Here on official Ardour site, you can only download binary installer, when
making a donation. When I try to download I have to enter invoice Id.
That’s where I get the error message above.
So If I really did get something wrong here, please give me steps to
reproduce free download of 7.4.
I think you will need Paul’s help on this, but if Paul is traveling, understand he is a person who needs time off once in a while like all people, and you may need to be patient by stroke of luck that your problem arose when he wasn’t at his workstation.
I would guess your issue stems from not being logged into Ardour’s site during the initial purchase, and I think I have seen Paul advise in past threads he can correct this with the Paypal invoice ID (understand I am just a forum member and have no knowledge of the details of those transactions or how they ultimately resolved). I would say if you have communicated with Paul by email, and the man wrote back while traveling…give him some time, and I bet he’ll help you if your problem is still lingering once he is home.
In your second post, you spoke of donating. A donation is independent of the build service payment that provides the binaries.
Thank you very much for your answer GuntherT.
I guess it is the not been registered /locked in while paying for the download link case.
It is no problem for me toa while for Ardour 7.4.
After using Ardour 5 than 6 for years, now I am working myself into the new phantastic 7.x features.
Minor versions updates are separate. Unless you paid $45 or more for Ardour 7.3, you will have to pay again for 7.4 (keep in mind that you may pay as little as $1 for the build service).
Thank you very much.
This is exactly the answer I needed.
Yes, that was me. I guess I’m still a bit fuzzy on the financial arrangements relating to Ardour. I’ve downloaded it at no cost through the Arch “Extra” repository. There is no cost for this - it’s FOSS in the usual sense.
Having said that, I really enjoy Ardour and so I’ve made a donation, and will most likely make further donations over time in the future.
That’s why I get a bit confused by the “invoice” approach to supporting this (wonderful) software. It’s a kind of middle-of-the-road approach to open source code support.
I appreciate that financial support provides for a more reliable cash stream and allows Paul and Robin to make longer term plans and devote more time and energy to the project. That’s why I choose to make donations, to support outstanding projects like Ardour (and other apps that I use).
