Imposter (a song about AI)

Hi,

An original retro-rawk work-in-progress about generative AI of all things. Done by myself in Ardour 9.2. I don’t know if it’s too silly to work on further or whether I’ll move on to other things but thought I’d post anyway in case the sentiment resonates. *Warning: I did a swear in it… :open_mouth:

Haha, it’s cool man! I laughed in places because of your clever lyrics. Especially during the spoken sequence. lol

Kinda reminded me Kevin Gilbert’s Shaming of the True album. Or at least a cut or two from it. Great album if you have never listened to it. It has a lot of Spock’s Beard and maybe even Zappa influences IMO. Other fantastic LPs by Gilbert include Thud and the Toy Matinee album. That album should be a classic. Every song is fantastic. Great credits too. Even Julian Lennon appears on it as well as some really asesome well-known studio musicians.

Many thanks!

I will have to check out those Gilbert albums, I’m generally not a Zappa guy but try to keep an open mind, opinions can change! I really appreciate the listen!

Yeah, please do check him out. We seem to have similar tastes in music so I am certain you will love his music. He has influenced me a lot for sure. Shame he is dead now.

Not having paid to much attention to the lyrics for first time listening (considering English is not my first language anyway) I find the musical ideas very interesting and compelling. Good song. Worth being completed.

Cool shit, entirely after my fancy! Very well played, sung, and arranged, I particularly like the lead and solo guitar. I would have chosen an even “wetter” snare but that’s a matter of taste, no complaint. The drums like you mixed them utterly fit with the song’s atmo.

Great rhyme: “top of the roster / It’s an imposter”. The spoken part is fab, reminiscent of “Art Is Dangerous” by The Defoliants, which is a good thing:

I usually find comparisons quite annoying and refrain from them as much as I can, so you may very well take this one as a compliment. I’ve got that LP on vinyl by the way, great stuff.

In my perception the song is complete, one could add a few backing vocals, but that’s about it.
Well done Mate!

Man thanks for the recommendation, I’m listening to “The best Laid Plans” on YT as I write.
Truly the 90s were a great time, they don’t make stuff like this anymore. And I’ve never heard of him, why didn’t anybody tell me!

EDIT a few minutes later: “Waiting” Live at The Truobadour is a doozy, too, BANG! right in the face, just the way I like it.

Thanks all! Much appreciated!

This song is not my usual thing although I have plenty of ‘socially critical’ songs I’ve never really come at it from a rebellious punk background. Sure I had a nice spell with The Replacements, early REM and the Velvet Underground but it wasn’t really home to me. I always just figured why can’t I just be incensed and grumpy in my regular favorite styles. That said I’m slowly working on a full album of outlier things I’ve tried out or that just don’t fit anywhere else. The death of the music industry has been very freeing as far as just indulging your ideas as they come and in addition getting old and starting to really enjoy living with a broken ‘give-a-shit’ is a nice silver-lining to go with the silver beard…

My feelings exactly. “I sing because I have a song, not because you like it” is a rough translation of a line by the German singer-songwriter Konstantin Wecker. I adopted the statement long ago, and I have no intention of making compromises now. And with ARDOUR providing the perfect playground - there you go. I’m looking forward to next year When I’m Sixty-Four, pun intended, haha!

BTW, “Silver Beard” would make for a nice band name, or if you’re more of an advocat for the naked truth, you could call it “Graveyard Blonde”! :open_mouth:

Loved that Wecker quote! Profound! Lol, “graveyard blonde”, I’d never heard that one either!
