I’ve got a casio ct s500. I’m taking the line outs from my keyboard the casio and putting them through a wire into the line in socket on my pc. My pc is running antix linux and I’m using the Ardour DAW. However even though I’m feeding in what I think are two separate and different signals; it looks like they are being recorded in mono. I’ve checked my ardour software and it looks like each of the two tracks is going to a different line in source. Line in 1 and Line in 2. Any ideas?
Is the line input on your PC a small 1/8"/3mm stereo jack? Have you verified that whatever adapter you use to connect two 1/4" plugs to the stereo line in jack is wired correctly?
Do you wish to record two separate mono tracks, or a single stereo track? You must select the channel configuration when you create a new track, and I believe that mono is the default configuration.
That would correspond with two mono tracks created. That is common if you are emulating an older analog style workflow where each mixer channel and tape channel would be independent and can be assigned as desired. If you prefer to treat the two channels from your synthesizer as a single stereo signal then you can delete those two existing tracks and create a new track, being sure to select stereo rather than mono:

The input to my pc is through an 1/8" jack. It is going into the line in (light blue) socket. I’ve buzzed out the cable with my DVM.
In answer to your next question. I was hoping to record two separate mono tracks. When I replay the two tracks back at the same time then it would come out as it does on the casio ct s500 speakers. In theory.
I will check that each track is configure as mono when I next test the system.
However I can see what you are saying. I’ll try the stereo option and see how I get on.
I thought that if I record on one line in channel then it would go to the corresponding side when played back.
Ok, that should be the default. Can you explain what you mean by your original statement?
You want to record mono tracks, it looks like they are being recorded in mono, so not clear what is different between what you desire and what you recorded.
I think I see what you mean. Each channel in the mixer has a panner (panoramic control), which by default will set the output of each mono channel to send equally to left and right. Click on the control and you can set each channel anywhere from completely to the left with none sent to the right, to completely to the right with none sent to the left, or anywhere in between.
If recording to a stereo track that will be the default. There is a width control on a stereo track which lets you change that, but the default will likely be what you want with a stereo track.
So I figured how to get the mixer view up. It makes it more like an old mixer that I would have used at church at the back showing each channel coming in to the mixer in a single vertical lane.
So I took your advice. I created a track which is a stereo track. Managing to get my casio ct s500 to do some panning was the hardest bit of it. But I got the desired outcome. Thanks.
