How to maintain / update templates efficiently

I know how to create a template and then use it to create a new session. But how do I maintain templates? Whenever I save a template, the dialog “Save as template” only asks me for description and template name. I can’t even see what the names of existing templates are. So if I want to have a versioned template, I’d have to somehow look up existing template versions, then open my session, go Create Session Template and type in the entire name from scratch. Then I realize that if I don’t want to type it all again, I have to go back and copy the template name…

So, how do people maintain templates?

I agree: managing templates is pretty basic in Ardour at the moment. It’s so easy to create a duplicate when you’re trying to update an existing template.

I use mixer strip templates more than session templates, and I came up with a hack to improve the experience by saving mixer strip templates as snapshots within a single ‘templates’ session. Using snapshots enables ‘versioning’ to a degree.

I was trying to think of a way to apply the same logic with session templates, but I haven’t been able to work it out.
