What information does Ardour 8.12 use whilst reading plugins to determine that there’s a “match” between an older one and a newer one (e.g. LV1 → LV2)?
For example, when opening an ancient Ardour 2.8.16 project in Ardour 8.12, I get this:
However, I have fully-functional LV2 versions of most of those, such as “Simple amplifier” (-a simple fader/gain plugin by Steve Harris) as shown here in my Plugin Selector:
→ Why is Ardour not recognizing them as the ‘same’ and automatically using the LV2 replacements?
→ How might I be able to ‘trick’ Ardour 8.12 into doing so? Is there some kind of tag I can manually adjust in the LV2 plugin data, etc.?
LV1 is the old LADSPA plugin system and it’s quite different from LV2.
The easiest solution is probably to install the LADSPA versions of those plugins.
It does not anything. Plugins are not replaced when loading old sessions, because that may break the session.
Because they may not be the same. It may be obvious to you, but just matching plugin name is not sufficient.
In theory meta-data could be used, but even then it’ll be hard to convert plugin state.
It’d be multiple manual changes in the session files:
LV2 plugins are identified by URI, LV1 by numeric-ID
LV2 ports are indexed by symbols (names), LV1 by numeric-ID
The TAP plugins are still LV1, so in your case it’l only be the amp, and perhaps Simple amp parametric EQ. Short of installing the old LV1 versions you could just note down the values form the session-file, remove the plugins manually, and then enter them in the LV2
… or just remix the whole thing. Perhaps you have learned new mix tricks that you didn’t know 15 years ago?!
Yes, I’m absolutely aiming to re-mix everything, and I’m working my way there slowly but surely, as the techniques and overall approach I had a decade ago was just… bad. -Inefficient, ineffective, etc… However, when I do open any ancient project sessions in A8, I would prefer them to be as original as possible, mostly out of my own curiosity.
I see, that does make sense.
I suppose this option here in the Preferences just gave me the wrong idea:
