…so I don’t seem to be able to keep my ruler setting after launching a session - it reverts to all rulers being visible and I have to un-check most fo them each time I start working on something (I’m only interested in min:secs and markers in my current project). I’m sure this is straightforward - can someon put me out of my misery?

tl;dr; it may no be possible due to a known bug – meanwhile fixed, and will be in upcoming Ardour 7.0.

Ardour 6.9 automatically shows rulers of the used grid. Changing the grid mode automatically changes the visible ruler(s). – You can disable this in Preferences > Editor > Snap
That may or may not solve your problem though. There is another related bug, that was only fixed recently (Restore rulers as saved with the session · Ardour/ardour@2cffca4 · GitHub).
