i have a basic version of Ardour (8.10.0 Sonora Portraits) and i am looking for a free General Midi instrument pack and a decent steady and solid free synth to use.
Any idea or link to downloadable contents?

SurgeXT is an excellent synth.
Firstly: the latest version of Ardour is 8.12. You should upgrade. The previous versions had a nasty bug that could corrupt your session under some special circumstances. If where you got Ardour from (i.e. your Linux distro etc.) doesn’t provide the latest version of Ardour, get the official binary form ardour.org.
Ardour already includes a plugin called “General MIDI Synth”, which uses a very decent set of General MIDI sounds. It also has a plugin called “ACE Fluid Synth”, which can load SF2 (not SFZ) sound fonts. Various sound fonts (General MIDI and for specific instruments), downloadable for free, are easy to find on the net.
