getting the latest ardour version into gentoo portage

There are quite a few gentoo users who are using this software and it would be great to get the latest version into the portage tree.

I understand why you have gone down the donationware download path, however, for inclusion in a package manager, it doesn’t work so well.

My suggestions are:
-a direct link for the purpose of downloading the tarball with wget.
-i’ll have it mirrored. (of course this will mean you don’t actually know how many people have the software)

In terms of still showing the donationware thing, i was thinking it could be included as a package install message, so the user would still see it.

Anyway, thanks for writing such amazing software.

Hmm… I was just about to switch back to Gentoo before I read this. I assume the Ardour svn codebase has tags for releases, so could you just do a svn get to that label? I’ve never really fiddled with portage so I’m ignorant in such matters.

I am also worried about that the donationware path will prevent the gentoo developers to include Ardour into portage. Hopefully there will be a workaroud e. g. manual downloading into /usr/portage/distfiles and emerge afterwards.

Guys…

If you install the Pro-Audio overlay you can install either of the SVN versions. I have posted to the list to see about 2.8 stable version being included. Although I’m not sure if it will be included as per the above reasons… Some ebuilds with license restrictions actually have fetch restrictions and give a direction to download the tarball from the website and copy into your /usr/portage/distfiles directory… I have made this suggestion. This would remove the problem.

However, you can always subscribe and feel guilt free.

cheers

Sorry, forgot the link to the bugzilla entry for the inclusion: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=266473

I am already a subsciber and I would highly appreciate if future versions of Ardour are included into portage.
