Getting started with Jack and Ardour

Hello All,

Are there any documents for an absolute beginner with regards setting up Jack and Ardour? I suspect getting either working may well be beyond my rather feeble computing skills, but I’m willing to give it a shot. Currently I’m struggling to even set up Jack, and most of the instructions I seem to be reading are specific to certain sound cards, or simply don’t work for me. I’ve installed Ardour, Jack (plus GUI) and JAMin. But I’m struggling to get Jack working with anything.

I’m currently running Linux MINT 5.0 and have a Sound Blaster Live 24 Bit card. Could anyone chuck a little advice at me to get me going? Ardour looks like a great piece of kit. It would be a shame if my ignorance prevented me from taking advantage of it.

I’ve been using Linux for about 5 years but only have a basic knowledge of fiddling around with it. So be warned.

Thanks all.

The bad news is that you appear to have yet another computer with a Truly Awful Audio Interface ™. The good news is that you should join the Ardour IRC channel (see the support page for details) and the nice people there will, in real time, help you figure out how best to use the piece of garbage that someone decided to install on your motherboard.

Thanks a lot Paul. I’ll do just that.

Best ones that I know are http://www.ubustu.com/globe/2007/05/29/how-to-configure-jack-in-ubuntu-studio/
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/GettingStarted and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToJACKConfiguration I used those and whilst they are on Ubuntu forums the most important Jack configuration issues are covered there.

Can you be more specific with exactly what sort of problem you are having? Are you running qjackctrl… does the server start, are you having x-run problems, does it crash… etc… paste a printout of the Messages in Jack if you don’t know how to answer directly

Cheers

Hello there,

Thanks for your response. Yes I do have qjackctrl installed and no the server won’t start. It says it’s starting, but then two seconds later it stops with the following messages.

Eventually, I stop it manually. Also, in one of the links you supplied, it says to enable realtime in setup. When I do this and restart I get the following…

…and sometimes Jack freezes up.

Thanks again for your help.
