You’re supposed to mix with your ears, not your eyes …
Then I guess you should make the whole GUI black.

I 100% agree with this, and have requested it before.
There are plenty of editing moments (i.e. not necessarily mixing moments) where adjusting the visual waveform like this would be super helpful.
Note that Ardour already does this for static region gain changes. So all we’re really asking for here is an extension of that same logic. If the initial gain is in any way adjusted, the waveform should visually reflect that, whether static or automation.
@paul What would be the man-hours it would take to implement something like this anyway, hypothetically speaking? Is the difficulty of a potential change like this the issue, or does this somehow go against some core Ardour/Mixbus style you guys want to maintain?
This, on the tracker, FYI:
0010064: Consider ‘dynamically’ adjusting the display of the waveform for a region according to its envelope…
…
And, also somewhat related (-in the sense that perhaps more (-not all, understandably) of the visuals should better reflect what you hear, imho):
0010217: Make waveforms visually ‘fade’ at ‘cross-fading’ areas between overlapping regions.
